Expertise and Capabilities — Lightweighting of Mirrors

1.4 Meter Mirror

We are constantly finding new ways to improve our technologies and make optics lighter, stronger and cheaper. This advanced mirror system demonstrator has an aerial density of
8 kg/m2.

Waterjet glass cutting and low temperature fusion welding produce stable and distortion-free lightweight mirrors for spaceborne imaging systems. ITT has developed advanced techniques to fabricate mirrors with lightweight or honeycomb cores. These optic blanks weigh a fraction of a solid mirror blank, but achieve the stiffness and integrity required for critical applications. Our state-of-the-art techniques have produced mirror blanks with an aerial density of 9 kg/m2.
